About the school: W. H. Council Traditional School, a school rich in tradition and legacy, is a magnet school, meaning that our students are selected randomly and come from all across Mobile County. We are also the only International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program in Mobile County. In the IB program, we focus on global perspectives that are critical in today’s society.
We were chosen as a Blue Ribbon School in 2013 and named a CLAS Banner School in 2014. In 2021, we were named the top elementary school in Alabama based on student performance. We receive numerous district and local awards each year in a variety of areas.
Our PTA has had 33 consecutive years of 100% membership. As a school, our biggest strength is our school community members, including our faculty, staff, students, parents, and community partners. We work together to make our students’ education the very best it can be.
We believe in quality teaching and learning every day at Council. We plan for success, and we are intentional in everything that we do.
Collaboration and teamwork is critical to our students’ success. Each grade level meets to collaborate each week, and teachers collaborate with our special teachers as needed to enhance instruction. These special teachers include our librarian, technology teacher, Spanish teachers, STEM lab teacher, IB Coordinator, art teacher, and our instructional coaches for reading and math. We all want what is best for our students at Council, and every decision we make is with their success in mind.
Our principal also meets regularly with our administrative team and with teachers to make sure we all have the same focus and address any issues that arise. Our principal has an open door policy and is always supportive of us.
Working at Council brings new professional friends along with coworkers who support and mentor you. We are a team at Council. If you are looking for a strong school, students who are eager to learn, a supportive environment, and an opportunity to be challenged to reach your full potential as a teacher, Council is the school for you.
